illaviciosa is in the central-eastern part of Asturias, 30 minutes from the cities of Oviedo and Gijón. On the coast of the Cantabrian Sea and close to the typical valleys of the region, it is a privileged spot and a natural paradise. The area is home to the Villaviciosa River Nature Reserve a magnificent marsh ecosystem that is thought to be the second most important area in Asturias for the overwintering and migratory rest stops of European water birds. Another fascinating place is the Icnitas paleontological site on the Jurassic coast. The characteristics of this site provide a fascinating insight into the life of the Jurassic-era dinosaurs. Art and architecture are other great tourist attractions in Villaviciosa. The region includes many monuments known as Asturian pre-Romanesque, which flourished under the reign of Alfonso II "el Casto" (789-842) and his son Ramiro (842-850) and were extremely different in relation to the architecture used in the rest of Europe during the same period. One of the architectural jewels of the period is the Church of San Salvador de Valdediós, the "Conventín", a national monument since 1931, declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1985. Up until the Romanesque period, Villaviciosa stands out in terms of both quantity and quality. Among the many valuable Romanesque creations is, most particularly, the Church of San Juan Bautista de Amandi. In short, this town and others around it form what is known as the Valle de la Sidra, an area of great natural and environmental wealth with a lot of historic-artistic heritage.
The natural, artistic and historic environment in the region of Villaviciosa provides many different activities from outdoor sports to visits to some of the most important Romanesque monuments in Spain: - Bike rides. - Hiking. - Environmental workshops. - Following the course of the Merón River to Merón beach, where different watermills can be seen.
